As a Santa Barbara wedding planner, I’ve had the privilege of planning hundreds of elopements and intimate weddings throughout the area. Every venue has its own personality, and each offers something special for couples who want a wedding that’s relaxed, beautiful, and uniquely their own.
Whether you’re envisioning a historic courthouse ceremony, exchanging vows on a secluded beach, or saying “I do” beneath towering redwoods, these are my favorite small wedding venues in Santa Barbara.
SANTA BARBARA COURTHOUSE
No list of the best Santa Barbara wedding venues would be complete without the iconic Santa Barbara Courthouse. Built in 1926, it’s one of California’s most photographed wedding locations—and for good reason.
One of the things I love most about the Courthouse is the joyful atmosphere. Nearly every day of the week you’ll see couples celebrating their weddings, creating a sense of excitement and romance throughout the grounds.
For intimate weddings with 15 guests or fewer, the Courthouse offers eight designated Small Ceremony Locations around the perimeter of the property which are marked from A to H in green letters. These locations Areas A, B, and C are located on the lawns along Anacapa Street. Areas D, E, F, G, and H are located on the lawns along Figueroa Street These locations are available without a ceremony site fee, making them one of the best values for a Santa Barbara elopement.
If you’ve fallen in love with the famous Sunken Gardens, reservations and a ceremony fee are required. The beautifully landscaped lawn, framed by the historic courthouse, creates an unforgettable setting for weddings of all sizes.
One of the biggest advantages of getting married here is the endless variety of photography locations. While ceremonies must take place in designated areas, wedding portraits can be taken throughout the property. From the elegant architecture inside the Rotunda to the romantic archways, colorful tile work, and lush gardens, every corner offers another beautiful backdrop.
The Clock Tower remains one of my favorite portrait locations. After climbing to the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of downtown Santa Barbara, the Pacific Ocean, and the red-tiled rooftops.
Inside, the second-floor mezzanine provides soft, flattering light year-round, while the Rotunda’s dramatic architecture creates timeless and artistic wedding portraits.
If you’re planning a courthouse wedding, keep in mind that holidays and special events can bring larger crowds. During Santa Barbara’s annual Fiesta celebration in early August, the Courthouse is full of music, dancing, and festivities. While some couples love the lively atmosphere, others prefer the quieter feel of a weekday or non-holiday weekend.
One of the greatest conveniences is that couples can obtain their California marriage license through the County Clerk-Recorder’s Office located inside the Courthouse, making it possible to receive your license and get married on the very same day.
BUTTERFLY BEACH
Just a few minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, Butterfly Beach feels like a peaceful coastal escape. With sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands, it’s one of the area’s most romantic locations for an intimate beach wedding or elopement.
Although it’s close to town, Butterfly Beach has a quieter, more secluded feel than other local beaches. It’s especially well suited for couples planning a private ceremony with just the two of them or a small group of loved ones.
Because this is one of Santa Barbara’s narrower beaches, checking the tide charts is essential. During especially high tides, the beach can disappear entirely, so I always schedule ceremonies with tide conditions in mind.
The best months for a Butterfly Beach wedding are typically July through October, when Santa Barbara enjoys warm, sunny weather and calm evenings. I generally recommend avoiding Saturday afternoons during the summer, as the beach becomes quite popular with locals and visitors alike. Weekdays and Sunday evenings usually provide a much more intimate experience.
One unique feature of Butterfly Beach is its famous October sunsets. Due to Santa Barbara’s south-facing coastline, the sun rarely sets directly over the ocean. But during October, everything aligns perfectly to create those spectacular sunset wedding photos couples dream about.
For photography, I always recommend scheduling your ceremony during Golden Hour, roughly an hour before sunset, when the light is soft, warm, and flattering
SANTA BARBARA MISSION ROSE GARDEN
Nestled in front of the historic Santa Barbara Mission, the Mission Rose Garden is one of the city’s most romantic garden wedding locations.
Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by thousands of fragrant roses with the iconic Mission providing a timeless backdrop. It’s a classic Santa Barbara setting that never goes out of style.
The garden is lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers and features hundreds of beautiful rose varieties. One fun piece of local history: there’s even a fragrant yellow rose named in honor of Julia Child, who called Santa Barbara home.
Thanks to Santa Barbara’s mild climate, the roses bloom for much of the year. They’re pruned back in late December before beginning to bloom again in early spring, typically reaching peak beauty in April.
Weekends, especially afternoons, can become quite busy, so I often recommend morning ceremonies for couples seeking a quieter, more private experience.
As long as you’re not bringing in equipment such as chairs or a wedding arbor, there is no site fee, making this one of Santa Barbara’s most affordable and picturesque ceremony locations.

EAST BEACH
If you’ve pictured yourself getting married on a wide sandy beach lined with palm trees, East Beach is an excellent choice.
Located near Stearns Wharf and downtown Santa Barbara, East Beach offers beautiful ocean views while still being close to hotels, restaurants, and reception venues.
Because it’s much larger than many nearby beaches, East Beach gives us greater flexibility with scheduling. Even during higher tides, we can almost always find the right ceremony location. Although I still carefully review the tide charts before every wedding.
I’ve coordinated weddings here during every season, but July through October consistently offer the most reliable weather for beach ceremonies.
Reservations are generally only required when setting up equipment such as chairs or an arbor. Most simple elopements do not require a permit, making East Beach an easy and convenient option for smaller celebrations.
Another reason couples love East Beach is its walkability. Many couples enjoy celebrating with dinner afterward at one of Santa Barbara’s exceptional waterfront restaurants, such as Convivo, located just across the street.

SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN
For couples who love nature, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden offers one of the most peaceful and distinctive places to get married.
Established in 1926 and celebrating its centennial, this remarkable 78-acre garden showcases more than 1,000 species of native California plants throughout beautiful natural landscapes in Mission Canyon.
One of my favorite ceremony locations is the tranquil Redwood Grove, where towering coastal redwoods create an awe-inspiring cathedral of nature. During spring, the Great Meadow often comes alive with brilliant California poppies, (our state flower) creating an lovely natural setting.
The Garden welcomes intimate weddings with up to 15 guests. While there is no ceremony site fee, reservations are required, along with admission tickets for each guest and a photography permit.
My team helps coordinate all of the required permits and logistics, allowing couples to simply relax and enjoy their day.

SANDY COVE BEACH
If you’re looking for a hidden beach that feels wonderfully private, Sandy Cove may become your favorite.
After descending a long wooden staircase, you’ll discover a secluded stretch of sand framed by dramatic sandstone cliffs and fascinating rock formations that emerge during low tide.
This hidden local favorite offers a wild, natural beauty that’s difficult to find elsewhere along the Santa Barbara coastline.
Because the beach is only accessible during lower tides, careful planning is essential. I always review the tide schedule before recommending this location.
Comfortable shoes are highly recommended for the walk down, but many brides simply change into their wedding shoes once they arrive.
If your vision includes a peaceful beach ceremony away from the crowds, Sandy Cove is an incredible choice.

ALICE KECK PARK MEMORIAL GARDENS
Just a few blocks from the Santa Barbara Courthouse, Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden is a hidden gem for couples seeking a lush garden wedding.
Filled with mature trees, flowering plants, ponds, and shaded pathways, the garden offers a peaceful vibe throughout the year.
One of the reasons I recommend this location so often is its versatility. Many couples choose to hold their ceremony here before heading to the Courthouse or nearby beaches for additional wedding portraits.
Photography opportunities are abundant, making it easy to create a diverse gallery of beautiful images without traveling far.

CORONADO BUTTERFLY PRESERVE / ELLWOOD BLUFFS
If dramatic ocean views top your wish list, Coronado Butterfly Preserve may be exactly what you’re looking for.
Managed by the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, this protected coastal preserve features scenic hiking trails, eucalyptus groves, meadows, ocean bluffs, and spectacular views overlooking the Pacific.
Our ceremonies are typically held atop the bluff, where couples exchange vows surrounded by endless ocean views.
During winter, thousands of Monarch butterflies gather in the eucalyptus groves, adding another layer of natural beauty to this remarkable location.
Reaching the ceremony site requires about a 10-minute walk along an unpaved trail, so comfortable shoes are recommended before changing into high heels.
For adventurous couples who love nature and want an unforgettable coastal setting, this is one of Santa Barbara’s most breathtaking hidden wedding locations.
